TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH IN CONSTRUCTION

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is the only charity that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community and their families. A crucial element of their strategy is to provide a wide range of free and widely available pro-active resources to support the industry.

July is ‘Talk To Us Month’ and the charity to encourage talking about our feelings, which is much easier said than done. Talking can be a way to cope with a problem you’ve been carrying around in your head for a while. Just being listened to can help you feel supported and less alone.

Who can you talk to?

Talking to someone you know can be a great place to start. Lighthouse Charity have various channels of free support you can use, depending on what you’re most comfortable with, including their phone helpline and text service.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for free and confidential support

Excellent energy-efficiency credentials at Saxty Way

Work is well underway at our Saxty Way site, in Thirsk, where we are building 47 dwellings with a mix of 2/3-bed semis, as well as four flats and eight bungalows. Already, twelve of the rent-to-buy properties are at second fix, with others at roof structure height.

As we celebrate #Net Zero Week, we are proud of the site’s excellent environmental credentials, with energy-efficiency measures which include all the homes fitted with solar panels and heated via air source pumps.

Working on behalf of Karbon Homes, the site, which started in June 2022, is due to be finished in February 2024, with the first properties expected for completion in the next few months.

Future Talent

Good luck to all of the students currently sitting their exams. Thinking about your next move can be tricky. Take each step at a time – do it well, with the right attitude and positive intentions. A career in construction can be both challenging and rewarding. As a key economic contributor for the UK it is an important industry to support.

Last week during the half term break we provided support to three aspiring students; one trying to decide on what trade to pursue an apprenticeship so they rotated round our key personel and went on a site visit to help gain invaluable insight and exposure, another benefited from work experience with our Accounts Team and another spent time with our Administration Department to understand what it is like to work in an office environment. The latter will join us again in the Summer as a Trainee to build on their experience whilst earning.

Ongoing opportunity. We only have the capacity currently to explore an Administrator Apprentice for later this year. This year has already seen a Manager Trainee, Labourer Trainee and Site Joiner Apprentice with some internal opportunitues for current employees as well as maintaining appropriate levels of support for our existing apprentices and commiting to apprentices on contract through our supply chain.

Watching this space helps you learn about what we do and aspects involved within the industry and the projects we undertake. The roles are vast, so if you have any questions whilst we may not have an appropriate opportunity with us at present we might be able to help you on your journey with our insight and support
